Photography Tips & Tricks

By Pat Shaaw

I’ve always thought its better to learn from someone else’s experience and mistakes than to make mistakes of your own.  Thus, here I’ll be gradually posting some photography tips, tricks, and techniques to get the right shot when you want it.

Tip #1 – Flash Overuse
Don’t overuse the flash on your camera.  Beginners tend to assume that low light and indoor shots must always use the flash to light up the shot.  In many cases, this is wrong.  As an example, taking pictures of people indoors where there is low natural light can actually produce a worse picture when using the flash.  Often the glare off people’s skin will emphasize the bad spots on their skin which results in unflattering shots.  Try using an off angle light source or increasing the ambient white lighting slightly but turn off the flash so you’re not over-lighting the subject’s face.

Tip #2 – Off Center Shooting
One thing that can really bring a shot to life is to change to focal points of the picture.  Instead of just placing the subject of your shot in the middle of the frame, try stepping back and taking your shot with the subject off the center.  It can make for some great and interesting photos.

Tip #3 – Equal Playing Field
Lets say you’re taking a picture of your favourite pet.  Instead of just standing and taking the shot from way up high, try lowering yourself to your pet’s eye level.  This makes it a much more personal and inviting photo, and can also help get the attention of the subject of your shot.  Even still, by being down at equal eye level, you won’t even need the subject looking directly at the camera to get that great shot.
