CONTEST! Nikon D400 release date!

By Pat Shaaw

So I wouldn’t call myself an educated source in this regard, but I’ve done enough research to feel my opinion on this is at least plausible.  I’m guessing the release date to be 7 Dec 09.  I figure, the D300 was released on December of 2007, the D200 was released in December 2005.  It only makes sense that the Nikon D400 will be released in December of 2009.  But, what fun is just a guess, at least compared to the idea of having a prize for guessing right?  This is why I’m running a contest.  All you have to do is post a reply to this post on your own blog with your estimated release date, linking back to my blog, then post a comment with a link back to your blog and the expected release date.  Now the important part =D the prizes.

1st Place (first person to guess the right date) – $50 payed through paypal and a link from my blog to yours!
2nd Place (second person to guess the right date) – $15 payed through paypal and a link from my blog to yours!
3rd Place (you get it…) – a box of cookies! (You pay the shipping) =D

I know, not huge rewards, but its free to enter =)  One entry per person!

Contest is over as soon as Nikon reveals their expected release date, so get on it folks =)

Hi at Nikon D400 News. Many photographers have it seems taken a wait and see approach or have just not dropped by this site. I even know of amateurs who think Nikon’s next BIG move will be the D400 with some of the predicted specs on your predictions expected. They however just seem to think Nikon and Canon both operate on auto-pilot and don’t follow any of these serious photo buff websites for clues as to what buyers want and will pay for. I have been in this industry long enough to know that is not true. The design engineers and decision makers at Nikon try to keep an ear to the ground to detect customer attitudes and especially what will be successful in a rapidly evolving technology.
As to actual date of release of the much anticipated Nikon D400 I say that is keyed to product development……they need to get 1080p HD video smoothed out with autofocus during the rolling shutter process. Then they pick a release date that jives with some event when the media and customers are paying attention to Nikon…..then it becomes reality. I also think December 2009 is likely. The rewards here are to the lucky buyers provided glitches have been all worked out as the D300 and D90 have demonstrated Nikon CAN and WILL do. Also rewarded would be Nikon sales. Right now the Canon Rebel Ti is getting sold to the buyer who has skimmed the surface for camera ads and hype.

would like to mention though look what happens with a Nikon D300 through Nikon D3x when it is switched to Continuous High Speed shutter release and the shutter release button is pressed down and kept down. The focus response is about as good as it can ever get in today’s cameras. We can’t ever ask for more in the released D400.

I revise my release estimate for the Nikon D400 to August 21, 2009……based on my reading of the situation. As to prizes for the ones who turn out to be right……Pat Shaaw has followed this as much as anyone I know of and I believe he guessed December 2009.
I think Nikon stands to gain much from a August release date. Yet they are not going to release at any automatic date. They will release when they have it right. As to mega-pixels I for one want for nothing exceeding 15. Some of this resolution range is so misleading. I just reviewed for others……results from their P80s and P90s versus D40 and D40X. A Nikon D700 at 12.1 mega-pixels is a perfect example when shot on FX with FX lenses, simply put I hope Nikon isn’t caving in to pixel counters!

Very insightful Photo Pro, I agree that far too much focus is put on the MP of the cameras. At a certain point, it just becomes redundant increases except in very specific situations. In most cases, 12.1 mp is more than enough, and I agree anything over 15 just isn’t necessary.
