And it will be FX not DX. I for one think this would be amazingly inconsistent for the Nikon nomenclature. And also somewhat earlier in release than I would expect. The Nikon D400 would logically update the wonderful D300 and add features found on the D90 which also should be upgraded on this camera. It should NOT be a upgrade to the D700! That logically would be a Nikon D800. I would hope to buy both a Nikon D400 in DX with video (rolling shutter capability and a Nikon D800 with the same but in FX. The fact is I would make the purchase of the DX Nikon D400 as soon as I could get one and do some real soul searching and probably decide against the D800 do to the fact that based on the D300s stellar performance for me (and many others). The fact is the D300 has been very successful for Nikon.<br /> All the reviews (including my own) rate that camera as one of the best ever. It is my all time favorite camera. I have owned cameras that just one of several lenses cost more than my D300 system! Yet the Nikon D300 ran circles around all of the rest! We hope for the same better<br /> performance from the D400 when it comes out. Should it be FX?? I believe NOT! I strongly believe in FX. I am just doing to well with DX to switch now.......and unlike many I already own great Nikkor FX glass right now. I would have to add one new FX lens to make the switch. That lens would have to be a mid-range zoom. Bottom line? I am putting my money and first next purchase on a Nikon D400 in DX. I also hope it comes with a Nikon kit lens of the 18-105VR which I have used a lot on Nikon D90 and I don't want or need another 18-200 VR. Due to their insistence I tried the 16-85 VR Nikkor and think that their suggestion was far better than mine. The Nikkor 16-85 VR is a better kit lens as then the growing number of very satisfied Nikkor 70-300 VR owners can add the D400 to their growing number of Nikons AND usable lens. I own and use the 18-200VR and use it less since I bought the 70-300VR. The old 70-300 D Nikkor lens has actually produced some of my most valued wildlife images. To get that rare really great shot you have to be in the right place at the right time. Starting with a new camera with great added features does improve my odds. Features on the D90 may contribute to virtually the same shot taken with D300 once in awhile looking like the D90 handled that shot a little better. The Active Lighting feature on the D90 is somewhat more advanced than the D300! When the D400 comes out it will hopefully set a new standard in DX DSLR cameras. Based on the D300 stellar performance that seems likely. Addition of video 1080 p using the tougher build of the D300 and upping the mega-pixels to a sensible level will be added. Yet it is a better deal to add a kit lens which we'd like to add to our gear that would really bring something to the party. That is where the 16-85VR could really help boost sales.
